Dermal fillers are a gel like substance made from hyaluronic acid. Hyaluronic acid (HA) is a chemical that is responsible for maintaining the structure and suppleness of the skin, muscle and connective tissue in the body. With the ageing process the skin’s ability to produce HA decreases and the signs of ageing begin to emerge. Volume loss in the face occurs and can dramatically change our overall appearance, causing a thinner and sagging look with deep lines and hollows causing shadowing in the face.

Dermal fillers come in various preparations which can be tailored to rejuvenate multiple areas to restore deep volume and fullness to the skin and thereby reduce the appearance of folds and wrinkles. As HA is naturally found in the body this makes dermal fillers extremely safe with very few side effects and excellent results!

Nasolabial folds - they are also referred to as “smile lines” and are the lines that run between the bottom of the nose to the corners of the mouth. They are mostly noticeable when smiling, laughing or talking, but over time they can develop into static lines.

Marionette lines - the grooves found between the corners of the mouth and chin which often give the appearance of a sagging or downturned mouth. They can make you look sad or angry when relaxing your face.

Frown lines - when we contract our forehead muscles, deep lines can materialise. Over time, these lines can be present constantly.

Vertical Lip lines - these are the wrinkles above and around the lips that can appear over time due to ordinary lip muscle movement

The procedure usually takes about 15-30 minutes. Local anaesthetic cream will be applied to the skin a few minutes before the procedure to help numb the skin. The filler is injected using a fine needle to the treatment area. The results of the injections will be visible immediately. It is a simple procedure and causes minimal pain as the fillers are constituted with local anaesthetic. It has a minimal recovery time and causes minimal redness or bruising.

You will see the results immediately, but the product will soften and settle over the next 1-2 weeks. Many fillers continue to absorb water for 48 hours after the procedure so you should expect up to a further 20% increase in volume. The effects of dermal fillers can last up to 12 months but the average time between treatments can be 4-6 months depending on the site of the fillers and the type used.

  • The following measures can reduce the risk of bruising occurring:

    • Avoid alcohol at least 24 hours prior to treatment

    • Stop aspirin* and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory tablets for 10 days prior to treatment

    • Avoid vitamin E for 2 days before your treatment

    • Avoid Gingko Biloba and St. John’s Wort ideally for 1 week prior to your treatment

  • Please remove make-up before you have your treatment

* if you are prescribed aspirin for a medical condition then do not stop unless permitted by your doctor

  • You can return to work or your daily activities after the procedure but it is recommended you avoid bending forward for extended periods of time or lying down for 4 hours after.

  • When you do sleep that night, try to do so on your back and propped up at 45 degrees.

  • Avoid alcohol consumption for 12 hours after the procedure

  • Avoid applying heavy makeup for 12 hours after the procedure

  • Please avoid extreme sun exposure, UV light, freezing temperatures and saunas for 2 weeks after treatment.

  • Drinking plenty of water in the first 2 weeks after treatment will help the HA filler to plump up.
